The Ardgowan Hotel in St Andrews provides the perfect base to experience these 4 terrific Scottish Links Courses. Here you can soak in the golfing history Scotland is known for with brilliant restaurants and bars only a short stroll away and with 2 modern and 2 historic interpretations of links golf there really is something for everyone.
Already in Golf World’s Top 50 British Links courses, Dumbarnie Links is the new creation of former Ryder Cup player and Architect, Clive Clark. Set on the 5000 acre Balcarres Estate on the East Coast of Fife, Dumbarnie Links looks like it has been part of the Links land for over 100 years. The design had every level of golfer in mind, with fairways width averaging 45 yards it gives the casual golfer the space to enjoy the links experience, whilst the higher skilled golfer can be tempted with tighter tee shots to drivable par 4s with suitable wind conditions. Unlike many of the famous, traditional links that play out and back, Dumbarnie’s layout is more akin to Muirfield and Royal St Georges. The course features a figure 8 like layout meaning the wind can be coming from different directions on each hole. This is a must play course when vising the Kingdom of Fife.
A 10 minute drive to the outskirts of St Andrews and you’ll find the newest addition to St Andrews Links, The Castle Course. Opened in 2008 it became the seventh course at the Home of Golf and part of the largest public golfing complex in Europe. Set on a rugged cliff-top with spectacular views over St Andrews, The Castle Course offers a memorable golfing experience.
Just a short walk from the hotel and you will be on the first tee of the Jubilee Course. It is considered by many to be the most challenging course on the famous Links. Built in 1897, it was originally intended for use by ladies and beginners; however, after seeing its prime golfing location between the New Course and the sea, the Jubilee was converted to a championship layout in 1988. It has evolved into one of the hardest courses at St Andrews Links.
A Scenic journey along the Fife Coast and you will play your final round at Crail Golf Club on the the Balcomie. A combination of stunning coastal views, centuries of history and hugely enjoyable golf is what makes Balcomie Links one of Scotland’s most finely polished, golfing gems. This traditional, classic links course was laid out by the old master himself, Tom Morris, and opened in 1895. Created in the days when course design was governed by the natural lie of the land and not the mechanical earth mover, Balcomie has the unusual combination of three par fives, six par threes and nine par fours, producing a tough par of 69
