A brilliant collection of Southport area links courses, this package offers four fantastic links golf experiences with fascinating golfing history. Make sure to check out the club houses before or after your rounds to take in the amazing memorabilia.
West Lancashire: The oldest club in Lancashire “West Lancs”, as its known, is an Open Championship Final Qualifying course, co-host for the Amateur Championship in 2009 and also venue for the British Championship in the same year. West Lancashire is one of the last true links courses remaining and offers a unique golfing experience. It poses a true challenge for even the most proficient golfer, a true links course steeped in history.
Hillside: Hillside lies a stone’s throw from Royal Birkdale, amid a stretch of sand hills on the outskirts of Southport, and has many of the attributes of it’s neighbour. The start, like Formby, is dominated by the railway line that runs parallel to the opening holes. The back nine was redesigned in the 1960s by Fred Hawtree. Greg Norman once described Hillside’s back nine as “the best in Britain”. Hillside hosted Open Championship Final qualifying each year from 2014 – 2017 and the British Masters in 2019.
Formby GC: Formby is a truly unique Championship links course and renowned as one of the world’s great links courses. Host to the Amateur Championship, Curtis Cup and many other international events, it is an experience not to be missed. The holes meander through a combination of the impressive sand dunes and pinewood forests of Formby, with the well protected greens and rolling links fairways challenging every shot.
Southport & Ainsdale: S&A as it is commonly known, was the proud host of the 1933 and 1937 Ryder Cup. The Club House, which boasts an impressive collection of memorabilia from the matches, affords a stunning panoramic view across the links. The course, renowned for it’s true and fast greens, pristine fairways and entertaining layout, has a variety of tees to ensure the course is enjoyable and challenging to both professional and amateur alike.
